Why does WoW takes ages to start playing on 1st installment?

just installed wow (world of warcraft) and i have had to update a patch on my third time now. and even though i have 10mb broadband 1st patch took 4 hrs 2nd (small one) 20mins and now the 3rd one is 3.27 gig and gonna take 6-7 hours. Are all these patches normal with everyone else and r there gonna be more (hope not). thanks in advance.
