[Twilight] Why do vampires...?

Edward explains it a bit. Once a vampire makes a certain choice, it's set in stone forever. It's a bit different than imprinting. Because with imprinting you can fall in love with more than one person. obviously, Edward could leave Bella, but since he fell in love with her, that won't ever change.
