What is causing my abdominal pain?

Two weeks ago ....three days before my period my tummy started swelling up. It was worse then regular bloating and hurt, I kind of looked pregnant. Then once I got my period i had cramps that were 10 times worse then they normally are. My doctor tested my liver but it came back normal. My period has ended and im still experiencing pain in my left side around my hip bone and sometimes my right. I think I am going to request a pelvic exam and ultrasound because I think this might be a uterus/ovaries problem. Both my aunt and grandma had to have a hysterectomy because of Fibroids on their uterus. Has anyone experienced problems like this and can give me some advice on what it could be and if im requesting the right tests? My doctor isnt giving me any suggestions on what could be causing the pain.
